Can a single powered conveyor handle different product sizes and formats?

A single powered conveyor can handle different formats when every product in the range remains supported, guided, detected and transferred through the same route. Suitability is controlled by the least favourable product state, not the average item. A design that carries the largest pack may still fail with the smallest base, lightest bottle, softest carton or most difficult sensor target.

Record the complete range before fixing conveyor width, roller pitch, guide positions, sensors, transfer gaps and change parts. Where one setting cannot serve all formats reliably, a controlled adjustment, format-specific component or separate conveyor section may be the more dependable option.

Which product in the range should set the usable conveyor width?

The widest product defines a minimum clearance, but it should not be used alone. Guide rail thickness, fasteners, lateral movement, changeover access and the narrowest product also affect usable width. A very wide bed with guides pulled inward can leave long brackets, weak support or difficult cleaning, so the practical adjustment range must be assessed as a system.

State belt width, roller length, chain width, guide clearance and overall frame width separately to avoid a quotation based on the wrong dimension.

How do guide rails and change parts affect repeatable changeover?

Adjustable guides work repeatably only when their height, gap, taper and transition positions can be returned to controlled settings. Scales, mechanical stops, labelled reference positions or stored recipes can reduce dependence on operator judgement. Format parts may be preferable where a shaped product needs a specific support or where a wide adjustment range creates poor geometry.

The changeover method should include verification with the first products, not only the mechanical adjustment.

When does a mixed product range need more than one conveyor format?

More than one conveyor format may be justified when products need incompatible support surfaces, cleaning regimes, guide contact, incline grip, accumulation method or transfer geometry. For example, a firm carton base may suit powered rollers while a flexible pouch needs continuous belt support. Trying to force both through one format can add complexity without creating reliable operation.

Compare the operational value of one adjustable route against the cost and risk of compromises, change parts or parallel sections.

What should be proven before multi-format operation is accepted?

Each agreed format should complete normal transport, stopping, restarting, transfer, sensing and any accumulation state without unacceptable tipping, scuffing, jams or manual correction. Changeover settings should be recorded, repeatable and checked by the intended operators. Acceptance should cover the difficult product states rather than only the easiest example.
